Application Stage

If I am interested in a position, how should I apply?

Please visit our Careers page where all our current vacancies are listed. You will be guided through our easy application system and will be prompted to upload your CV in a word format along with your covering letter, if appropriate.

Can I apply for more than one vacancy?

Yes, you can apply for more than one vacancy.

Can I apply if I don’t have a work permit?

You must have a valid work permit, where required, to work at NewLaw Scotland. It is your responsibility to provide evidence of the work permit in line with current Home Office guidelines.

What is the application process?

Please refer to the Application Process section where the journey you can expect as an applicant is outlined for you.

What can I expect after I have made an application?

You will receive an acknowledgement once your application has been successfully received. Our recruitment team will review your application and advise you on whether you have been invited to the next stage, or if you have been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, due to the large volume of applications we receive, we are not able to provide feedback to applicants that are not shortlisted for interview.

Interview Stage

What type of interview will it be?

We usually only conduct one to one interviews, you will be notified if there is any change to this prior to you attending.

Do I need to prepare for the interview?

Preparation is key for any successful interview. We want to get to know you and allow you the opportunity to demonstrate how you are the best candidate for the role. You will be asked a mix of competency and biographical questions during the interview. We would advise that you review the job advert on our Careers page, and consider the skills that you can bring to the role and the company.

Do I need to bring anything?

As standard practice, you are not required to bring anything with you to your interview. If we do require any specific documentation then we will request this from you at the time of arranging the interview.

Can I claim travel expenses for my interview?

Unfortunately, we do not provide expenses for costs incurred for attending your interview.

Is there on-site parking?

The office adress is: 7th Floor Delta House, 50 West Nile Street, Glasgow, G1 2NP

The closest off site parking is Buchanan Galleries, 220 Buchanan Street, Glasgow, G1 2FF, a 3-10 minute walk (local charges apply)

Who should I ask for when I arrive at NewLaw?

Please report to the main reception and ask for either of the interviewers indicated on your interview confirmation email.

How long will the interview last for?

Interviews normally take about an hour, but in some cases may take longer - up to 2 hours.

Will there be an assessment?

We don’t normally conduct an assessment, but if one is to take place we will let you know in advance.

Please make sure you let us know if you require any adjustments for or during the interview.

Will I hear back from you following an interview?

Yes, we will endeavour to contact you as soon as possible following your interview. A member of our recruitment team will provide you with an outcome, whether you have been successful or not.

Following The Interview

If I am unsuccessful can I reapply?

We are sorry if you have not been successful. However, you are welcome to make another application in 6 months time.

I have accepted an offer of employment.
What happens next?

Our recruitment team will be in touch via email to confirm the basic details of our offer of employment. Following this, you will be required to provide us with some personal information, so we are able to draw up your contract, provide your starter pack and make any required pre-employment checks (including references).

What documents will I be required to provide?

You may be required to provide the following documents to our HR team on your first day:

  1. Passport or National Insurance Card and Birth Certificate
  2. Proof of Qualifications
    • Your original GCSE/A Level Certificates.
    • Your original Degree Certificate(s) (if applicable).
    • Masters Degree/Post Graduate Diploma Certificate.
  3. Membership of SRA/CILEX etc... (if applicable)
    • Practising Certificates are required for all Solicitors who are on the Roll.
    • Your mySRA login details, as you will be required to change your employer within your mySRA profile as part of your induction.
    • Copy of CPD record for current CPD year.
  4. P45, if you have it
  5. Work Visa (if required)

How soon will I be expected to start?

Your start date will be arranged depending on your availability and / or our business need. We usually start new employees on a Monday (or 1st working day of the month).

What will my working hours be?

Core working hours are 37.5 or 40 hours per week depending on your role and department.

What is the probationary period?

The standard probationary period is 6 months.

What can I expect in my first week of employment?

A member of our team will be in touch with you shortly before you start. They will outline the training and induction plan we have in place for you. Additional training days may be required, depending on the role you will be carrying out.

What opportunities are there for career development?

We have a great history of developing our talent at NewLaw. Career development will largely depend on your aspirations, but we aim to retain and support individuals with a blend of training methods, development plans and promotion opportunities at various levels.

Do you provide support so that I can study towards professional qualifications?

Once you have successfully passed your probationary period, you can apply for financial support for professional studies. The level of support we provide depends on how vital the qualification is for your role.

Do you offer Solicitor Training Contracts?

Yes. We have an ongoing commitment to our training contract scheme which is made available to existing employees. There are qualifying conditions for the application process, but we do not offer these oportunitues externally.
